The best riders in the world will compete in the mountains of the Alto Sangro ski area at SnowKite WorldCup from 14th to 18th February. The event is a part of a world tour promoted by IKA (International Kiteboarding Association), member of World Sailing, and in collaboration with FIS (International Ski Federation) on individual snowkite events.

The disciplines will be CrossCountry / Long Distance and especially the GPS Formula.

Using of the innovative GPS formula

The leg of Roccaraso, in the Alto Sangro ski area, is organized by A.S.D Outdoor 360 and the snowkite school in Roccaraso, SnowkiteRoccaraso.com. The particularity of the event in Roccaraso is the innovative GPS formula: the athletes are equipped with a tracking system that constantly records their movements and a software that evaluates their performances. The riders will be called to achieve, in 60-minute race sessions, more kilometers, more variations in height and more distance from a starting point. Therefore there are no more pre-established routes but total freedom of their choices. An innovation in contrast with the classic regattas that use buoys to delimit the competition area. The choice of the GPS format required the creation of a dedicated software that the organizers believe should be extended to other disciplines. In addition to the GPS system, athletes must bring with them an avalanche transceiver, snow shovel and probe to ensure maximum safety. To prevent risks, during everyday’s riders meetings, the organizers will report areas with dangers and steepest slopes.

Athletes skills

The mountainous areas are by nature subject to greater variations in wind direction and intensity due to the change of altitude. Within a few meters riders can have good wind conditions but also none at all. Therefore the skills of the best athletes consists not only in speed and courage but in the ability to correctly interpret these variations and by choosing paths with the best weather conditions. Niccolò de Simone - organizer of the event - explains the rules: "Rules are simple: travel in a given unit of time more kilometers, more variations in altitude and more overall perimeter coverage through the use of a GPS. These means maximum freedom of movement and the possibility to choose one's own path". The motivations and objectives related to the organization of the Snowkite World Championship in the Alto Sangro ski area - says Niccolò de Simone - is the desire to offer companies innovative formats related to emerging and spectacular disciplines but also the search to get out of the traditional sponsorship schemes to create an event with a race format which is appreciated by athletes, two essential elements for the success of the event. For the Mayor of Roccaraso, Francesco Di Donato, the Snowkite World Championship "represents a further opportunity to measure our ability to host a sport event that will show our area worldwide. Moreover, it is a sport that is followed with great attention by young people who represent a market segment on which we are making the most important efforts in terms of tourism promotion".

Why the choice of the Alto Sangro ski area

"The location of the event is of fundamental importance - explains the president of the Skipass Alto Sangro Consortium, Bonaventura Margadonna - we have always hosted competitions of international level and we are convinced that this world championship represents an extraordinary opportunity for us to showcase the potential of our area and our facilities”. The Alto Sangro ski area is in fact particularly suitable for snowkiting for the conformity of the mountains. There are in fact large areas with slopes not too steep and with no trees which are essential conditions for the practice of snowkiting in a safe environment. In addition, the presence of efficient and well-distributed ski lifts allow a very rapid movement in the various race areas.

The different Race Areas

The organization will identify the different locations of the event day by day. Amongst the possible race areas there are the Cinque Miglia plain, Vallefredda, Toppe del Tesoro and Monte Pratello. All info and communications will be given on the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/snowkiteroccaraso/.

From 26 – 28 January 2018 Lake Reschen played host for more than 80 Snowkiters from all over Europe at this years first IKA SnowKite WorldCup stop with Florian Gruber (GER) being the dominating force in both Course Racing and Long Distance disiplines.

The first day was all about the Long Distance Race, where 81 Snowkiters fought to finish the course around the lake as fast as possible. After four laps and approximately 60 km in 1hrs and 39 minutes Florian Gruber (GER) finished just before Felix Kersten (GER) and Bruce Kessler (SUI) in the ski division.

In the snowboarding division Ronny Bollhalder (SUI) was leading the first two rounds and had the victory almost secured until cramps in his legs stopped him from keeping up his lead. Bernd Spiering (GER) and Aldo Storelli (ITA) took advantage and left Ronny in third place.

Nadine Stippler (GER) was the only woman on ski, who finished the Long Distance Race. Latvian power girl Aija Ambrase was able to win against Silvia Semprini (ITA) on her snowboard.

Saturday and sunday was all about Freestyle and Course Racing. Unfortunately the wind didn’t show up on Saturday so that the spectators and competitors enjoyed the beautiful weather and great athmosphere in the event village.

The windless day was no disappointment for the many spectators though who came out to the event village to enjoy the hospitality and get a taste of the local food and drink specialities on offer. Old and young enjoyed the sunshine, after it had snowed for almost one full week in the leadup to the event.

The final day brought bright sunshine and a stable northerly breeze of 10 knots, and racing finally got underway at 10:30. After 6 successful races and a few prostest hearings the organizer were able to crown the winners of the first event of the IKA Snowkite Worldcup 2018.

Felix Kersten tried hard to fight against his countryman Florian Gruber, but couldn’t beat his outstanding performance. With another second podium spot it was truly a successful weekend for Felix. The third place goes to Russian Pro-Rider Andrei Balyakin.

Also the girls showed that they belong on the racing track. On her snowboard, Aija Ambrasa from Latvia won every single race and secured well deserved the first position on the podium. Silvia Semprini from Italy saved the second place before Judith Müller from Germany.

With her first time on ski while kiting, Jana Schader (GER) left Anna Maria Gadzinowska (ITA) and Lisa Pozzi (SUI) behind and scored another spot on the podium.

In the afternoon the Freestylers were able to show what kind of tricks they got in their pockets. In the middle of lake they hit the kickers and sliders and impressed the crowds with spectacular rotations and jumps.

Andrea Luca Amman (SUI) was able to take the victory before local Rider Fabian Oberhofer (ITA) and Heinar Brandstötter (AUT). Jana Schader (GER) went straight after the races into the Freestyle-Competition and won against Aina Renolen (NOR) and Carola de Groot (NED).

The tour now continues to the second Italian stop in Roccaraso, where the Formula GPS discipline will debute and reward the best Ski and Snowkite Freeriders for best use of the terrain. As second discipline, Cross Country Racing is scheduled, long distance races similar to the one on Lake Reschen but including ascends and descends as given by the large skiing area in central Italy.

Saturday, 30 December 2017 20:46

The inaugural IKA SnowKite WorldCup will include the well proven snowkite events in Reschensee, Roccaraso (both Italy) and Ercyes, Turkey.

The disciplines featured will be Course Racing (standard windward/leeward courses similar to sailing), Long Distance / Cross-Country (a long distance race making use of the geographical situations at the venue, including ascends and descends) and Formula GPS (a freeride race format where riders collect points depending of their use of the racing area, covered distance, altitude and other parameters).

Freestyle exhibition events may be added depending on the snow and weather forecast.

The aim of the SnowKite WorldCup is to give the world's best snowkiters a competition platform with a strong focus on media and promotion of the riders and their sponsors and brands.
