A beautiful day 1 at Giau Pass for the Cortina IKA Freestyle & Bigair World Championships.
The day started with the skippers meeting at refuge Da Aurelio, with the head judge Ian Sleuyter offering the riders a detailed briefing on judging criteria. A short time breeze came late, but gave the opportunity for some action.
Men ski discipline hit the slopes of Giau for a Big Air session. After three attempts, Diddier Botta from France offered the best trick of the day, followed by Lorenzo Lorè Mognol from Italy and Eloi Rondeau from France. A promising first day here at Cortina 2022 freestyle contest.
The International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) Executive Committee echoes the reaction of the International Olympic Committee regarding the developing situation in Ukraine.
Sport can be a force for good, bringing competitors from around the world together, united by the values of equality, inclusion, respect and fairness. We hope that the hostilities will end and that constructive dialogue will lead to the resolution of any differences.
In the meantime, following the resolution issued by the IOC Executive Board earlier today, the IKA Executive Committee will not accept athletes and officials from Russia and Belarus in any IKA class event. Furthermore, the IKA Executive Committee will not consider any class activities in Russia and Belarus or any cooperation with Russian or Belarusian entities.
The IKA Executive Committee will continue to closely monitor the situation and may adapt its recommendations and measures according to future developments.
The IKA Executive Committee reaffirms the call of the IOC President: “Give peace a chance”

The best riders in the world will compete in the mountains of the Alto Sangro ski area for the 8th edition of the Snowkiting Championship. The event is a leg of a world tour promoted by IKA (International Kiteboarding Association), member of World Sailing. The disciplines will be Course Racing, Long Distance and GPS Formula.
After careful consultation with our event organizers regarding the health and safety of everyone in our sport – riders, officials, spectators – we have made the difficult decision to also postpone the final event of this year's Snowkite World Cup season.
The Snowkite World Cup Cortina was set to take place from 18-21 March in Passo di Giau, one of the highest passes in the Dolomites mountain range.
Following ongoing concerns about the COVID-19 virus and the associated restrictions on international travel, we feel that this is the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold the tour in 2021, especially as all venues have seen the best snow conditions since years. But we know it is the right decision based on the information we have today.
IKA regrets to announce the cancellation of the 2021 SnowKite Racing World Cup events in Kharkiv (UKR) and Roccaraso (ITA) due to COVID-19.
Despite all effords and the committment of our event organizers, the development of the worldwide pandemic has put a full stop on all international travel and with quarantaine requirements widely in place across Europe and the World, holding international events is simply not feasible. If travel conditions improve, informal events may be held on short notice.
Both events, as well as the traditional Reschensee event cancelled already earlier in January, will be on the schedule for the 2022 World Cup season.
A decision on the Freestyle and Big Air World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo will be taken closer in time.
